Does Equipment Coverage Include Breakdown or Mechanical Failure?

Excavation Insurance Group explains why standard equipment floaters exclude mechanical breakdown, and where that coverage actually has to come from instead.

Quick answer: Excavation Insurance Group on this: Usually not by default. A standard equipment floater is built for sudden, accidental physical loss or damage, theft, fire, collision, tip-over, not for wear-and-tear failures or mechanical breakdown. That coverage typically has to be added separately, if it’s available at all.

WHAT AN EQUIPMENT FLOATER IS BUILT TO HANDLE

Equipment floaters respond to external, accidental events: a machine stolen from a jobsite, damaged in a collision, tipped over on unstable ground, or destroyed in a fire. What they generally exclude is internal mechanical or electrical failure, a hydraulic pump giving out, an engine failing from normal wear, an electrical system shorting on its own. That distinction, sudden external event versus internal wear, is the line most contractors don’t realize exists until a breakdown claim gets denied.

WHERE BREAKDOWN COVERAGE ACTUALLY LIVES

Mechanical breakdown protection is typically a separate coverage, sometimes offered as an endorsement to an equipment floater and sometimes only available through an extended warranty or service contract from the equipment manufacturer or dealer. Given how much unplanned downtime a major hydraulic or engine failure can cost an excavation operation, in lost production time as much as repair cost, it’s worth asking specifically whether breakdown coverage is available and what it costs, rather than assuming it’s bundled into standard equipment coverage.
