Quick answer: Excavation Insurance Group on this: Actual cash value (ACV) pays replacement cost minus depreciation for age and wear, while replacement cost pays what it takes to replace the machine new, with no depreciation deducted. Replacement cost costs more in premium, ACV costs more at claim time on an older machine.
HOW EACH ONE PLAYS OUT ON A REAL CLAIM
Say a five-year-old excavator is destroyed in a fire or stolen and never recovered. Under ACV, the payout reflects what that machine was actually worth right before the loss, already discounted for five years of wear and hours logged. Under replacement cost, the payout reflects what it costs to buy a comparable new machine today, regardless of what the old one had depreciated to. On newer, higher-value equipment, that gap can be substantial, and it’s the whole reason replacement cost coverage exists as an option.
WHICH ONE MAKES SENSE FOR YOUR FLEET
Replacement cost tends to make the most sense on newer, higher-value machines, where the depreciation gap is largest and the added premium is worth closing it. ACV can be the more cost-effective choice on older equipment nearing the end of its useful life, where the depreciation gap is already small and paying extra premium to close it barely moves the payout. Some carriers also offer an agreed value endorsement for specialized equipment, settling a specific dollar figure up front instead of relying on either method’s formula.
