What’s Excluded from a Standard Excavation GL Policy?
Excavation Insurance Group lists the three most common gaps in a generic contractor GL policy: pollution, utility damage sublimits, and subsidence exclusions.

Quick answer: A standard, generic contractor GL policy commonly excludes or sharply sublimits pollution, caps underground utility damage well below the overall limit, and may not clearly address subsidence or earth-movement claims that surface after the job is done. Excavation Insurance Group underwrites around these specific gaps rather than leaving a contractor to find them during a claim.
THE THREE COMMON EXCLUSION AREAS
Pollution. Most standard GL forms exclude pollution outright. A fuel or hydraulic leak, or disturbing contaminated soil, typically isn’t covered unless a separate Pollution Liability policy is in place. This is one of the most frequently missed gaps because contractors assume GL covers everything environmental.
Underground utility damage sublimits. Even where coverage exists, it’s often capped at a fraction of the policy’s overall limit, buried in an endorsement most contractors never read closely.
Earth movement / subsidence. Damage that surfaces after backfill, a settled trench, a cracked foundation months later, can run into exclusions or limited “completed operations” language in policies not written with excavation’s long-tail exposure in mind.
WHY THIS MATTERS MORE THAN THE PREMIUM
A cheaper policy that excludes these exposures isn’t actually cheaper, it’s just deferring the cost to the moment a claim hits and finds the gap. Reviewing a policy specifically against these three areas, before binding, is the difference between coverage that looks fine on paper and coverage that actually holds up.
